So you’ve met your first war forged and don’t really know what to think? You’ve read of magic users embedding their essence into clay or stone to create a complacent partner, often known as a golmn, but this seems different. So, in what ways are the two creatures different?
This is a common query presented by newly practicing magic users. On paper, and in appearance, war forged are extremely similar to golmns. They both are immune to common diseases, they are made up of non living components, and don’t need to eat, or sleep. So…what’s the difference. Well, you could ask the same thing of elves and humans. They share many similar traits, but you would never mistake an elven ranger for a human now would you?
So what splits these two beings apart? Well, it’s kind of cheesy, but that would be free will. A war forged can think for themselves. They make complicated decisions based on preferences they have established throughout their conscious existence, and weigh that against personal prejudice and political air.
In short, war forged have a soul, while golmns do not.
Golmns are made for a singular purpose: serve their magical master. Many constructs can make their own decisions without the command of their master, but none of their personal preferences or prejudice are taken into account. This is mainly due to the fact that they don’t have any personality. You could consider them just another tool a caster carries around with them on their quest.
Hope that clears the air a little and helps you better interact with your new war forged neighbor. We’ve encountered a few war forged on our journeys, perhaps I’ll reach out to see if any of them are interested in guest blogging…I’ll get back to you on that.
