Top 3 Skills Every Adventurer Needs to Have

Adventurers come in all shapes and sizes, with a variety of skills at their disposal. We only have so much time on this mortal plane, so we need to be selective of which skills we decide to train, mentally and physically. During my time as an adventurer, I’ve met so many talented individuals, with a plethora of skills, but there are three that stand apart from the rest. I’m not saying you should specialize in these skills, but they are a great addition to any adventures arsenal despite their discipline.

Alchemy
Alchemy is the art of transmuting one substance into another, often with the use of magical or scientific techniques. It can be a difficult skill to master, but for adventurers, it can be incredibly useful. For starters, alchemists can create potions and other consumables that can give their allies an edge in combat. They can also create useful items like anti-toxin to protect against poison, or a potion of water breathing to explore underwater. I’m a bit partial to this skill myself, since I worked in a potions shop before becoming a full time adventurer.

Thievescant
This is a secret language used by thieves and burglars to communicate with each other without being understood by outsiders. It can be useful for adventurers to know thieves’ cant because it allows them to blend in with criminal elements, gather information, and even pass secret messages without being detected. It’s also useful for deciphering any coded messages they might come across in their adventures. You can take this skill a step further by incorporating it into your team’s natural language, being able to communicate without worry of someone spying on you. This language is constantly changing and evolving, so learning it is a bit tricky. It’s best to find someone who’s worked in that world (like a rogue) to teach you the linguistic ropes.

Tame Animal
This can come in handy in a variety of situations. For example, a tamed mount can help an adventurer travel faster and with more ease. A trained animal companion can also serve as an extra set of eyes and ears, alerting the adventurer to any dangers that may be lurking nearby. Tamed animals can even serve as companions or guards, protecting a client on an escort mission if you get surrounded my hostiles. Plus, you never know when you might run into an impressive mount.

In summary, alchemy, thieves’ cant, and the ability to tame and train animals are all valuable skills for any adventurer to have. They can give an adventurer an edge in combat, help them gather information, and even serve as useful companions. Whether an adventurer is just starting out on their journey or they’re a seasoned pro, these skills are sure to come in handy at some point.
